Over the past 135,000 years, humans have relied on dogs and cats for companionship. Long before we began to create works of art, compose music, and even bury our dead; we have shared our homes and food with our furry friends. Yet, after tens of thousands of years and countless generations of domesticated animals, we grant them virtually no protection under the law, a mere whisper of guaranteed rights and most importantly little respect. William Ralph Inage observed, “We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the devil in human form.” ANIMAL is intended to expose its audience to the inhumane treatment of companion animals and inspire changes in both attitude and behavior. It specifically argues for the better treatment of domesticated animals and serves to build a case against euthanasia for population control, poorly trained animal control divisions and the objectification of animals.
